Fall is in the air...

Josh loves apple butter (and I happened to be feeling very ambitious today) so I decided to try and make some organic apple butter from scratch.
I found a recipe on another cute blog I follow, went shopping at Earth Fare for all the yummy ingredients, and whipped it up during Lily's nap!  It wasn't very difficult and it made the whole house smell so amazing.
The recipe made enough to fill 8 mason jars, so I decided to take some to several of our new neighbors.
Here are some pics of my culinary adventure :)

Ready to get started

All chopped up (definitely the most time consuming part!)

Mixed up and ready to start cooking...

After about 5 hours...

DONE!

Taste test from my toughest food critic...she liked it!

Here is the recipe I used:

Crock Pot Apple Butter (yields 5 pints)

16 peeled, cored & chopped apples
1 1/2 C white sugar
1 C light brown sugar
2 T cinnamon
1/2 t ground cloves
1/2 t ground nutmeg
1/2 t kosher salt

Put all ingredients in the crock pot and stir to coat the apples
Cook on High for 1 hour
Reduce to Low for 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally
Once the apples are a dark brown color, scoop the mixture into a mesh colander to drain off some of the excess liquid
Blend the mixture to your desired apple butter consistency
